Abstract:
Power electronics systems are rich in nonlinear dynamics. Engineers who work in this field are frequent chaos observers whether they admit (or know) it or not. Because engineers are interested in the usual regular periodic operating regimes, they tend to either ignore the “strange” behaviour that they encounter in their workbench or simply derive some quick fixes via some trial-and-error procedures.
 In this talk, a brief overview of some aspects of bifurcation and chaotic behaviour of power electronics circuits is given, with emphasis on the typical bifurcation scenarios arising from the smooth and nonsmooth characteristics of power electronics circuits. The dc/dc converter will be used as the main illustrative example. It will be shown that power electronics circuits exhibit many standard bifurcations such as Hopf, period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as a special type of bifurcation known as border collision. These types of bifurcations may occur in power systems and wind power generator systems.


报告人简介
:Professor Herbert Ho-Ching Iu received the B.Eng.(Hons.) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 1997, and the Ph.D. degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, in 2000.Since 2002, he has been with the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, The University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia, where he was initially a Lecturer and is currently a Professor. He was a Visiting Lecturer with the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, France, in 2004, and a Visiting Assistant Professor with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2006. He is the author of more than 100 published papers. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Newsletter, and International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, an Editorial Board Member for Australian Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He is a Co-editor of Control of Chaos in Nonlinear Circuits and Systems (World Scientific, 2009). His research interests include power electronics, renewable energy, smart grid, nonlinear dynamics, current sensing techniques, and memristive systems. Professor Iu is a Senior Member of IEEE.
